These kohaku were produced from a sister of Seio, who was runner-up at the at the 2003 All Japan Show. The mother is 6 years old, 76cm and still growing. The male is an offspring of 90cm+ Eagle, both parents are of Momotaro breeding.

The sanke above shows it's development over a couple of months. It is the offspring of a very special sanke female, it was the Momotaro number one sanke, but in 2003 it broke it's back while spawning, the koi lived but is very misshapen. Because of it's handicap, it is very slow at feeding and does not carry very much weight. For Momotaro it would not be productive anymore, but for me the two or three thousand fry it produces are fine. It was a big gamble buying this koi, as shipping to the UK could have been very dangerous for a koi in it's condition, also it may not be capable of breeding any more with a broken back. But all was successful, though the males used were perhaps not good enough, I have better for this year.

Born 29th June 2004

Here is another from the same spawn, the first photo is at the first cull and about 5cm. The second is taken on 20th January 2005 at 26cm.

It can be seen from the photos, that sumi on very young sanke changes a lot. This makes culling very had and you have to learn to predict the future.

Here is another, though not quite the same quality, it is showing poor sashi on the shoulder at a point that cannot be ignored.

The head pattern has changed a lot, though the basic shape is the same, the pattern has lifted onto the top of the head as it has grown.

Over the last few years I have bred some beautiful Chagoi, 2004 was no exception. Colours range from very light fawn through to brown, some show a yellow tinge to the brown, others green.

They are bred from exceedingly good stock from Hirasawa and grow at a tremendous rate, some will be 14" by March. (Edit: We are just at the start of February and some are already over 15"!)
